My Quilt Won’t Lay Flat

Wavy borders and / or fullness in the body of the quilt is a common problem seen with many quilts. Both of these problems will prevent the quilt from laying flat and in each case, can result in having tucks and pleats stitched into the quilt top during quilting.

These problems can be avoided by:

  • Before attaching borders, take three measurements across your quilt, through the centre, centre left & centre right, and use the average of these three measurements to determine the length of your border;
  • Cutting border fabrics on the straight grain (lengthwise) of the fabric. (These are stronger and straighter threads than the crosswise threads) ; and
  • Attaching borders by matching registration points on the quilt top. (Match pins at half, quarter and three quarter sections of your quilt top and border).
